What Is an IOP?
Seeking treatment for a mental health or substance use disorder can be challenging — both emotionally and practically. Busy schedules, work and family responsibilities can make getting care difficult. At Arbour Hospital, our intensive outpatient program (IOP) offers structured, flexible care that’s tailored to your life.
An IOP is a part-time, outpatient program that’s less intensive than partial hospitalization or inpatient care. It involves fewer hours of treatment per week, so it’s easier to get the care you need while maintaining your daily responsibilities. An IOP eases the transition back to daily life and increases your chances of sustained recovery.
Adults 18+ can get care at our IOPs for mental health and substance use disorders. We offer mental health treatment at our Branches outpatient locations: Branches Jamaica Plain, a service of Arbour Hospital; and Branches Quincy, a service of Arbour Hospital. Substance use disorder treatment is at Branches Jamaica Plain only.
Treatment takes place Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 9:30 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. People typically participate in our IOP for three weeks.
In-Person and Virtual IOP: Why Choose Us?
At our IOP for adults, you’ll find:
- Virtual mental health treatment: Attend in person or online at times that work for you. Our flexible scheduling options mean you can work treatment into your busy life.
- Convenient locations: Our Jamaica Plain and Quincy locations are near public transit stops. Affordable transportation options are available upon request. Our staff makes the arrangements to make life easier for you.
- Latino IOP in Spanish: A language barrier shouldn’t get in the way of recovery. Our Latino outpatient programs offer group therapy in Spanish, so you can feel more comfortable sharing and learning.
- More ways to pay: We accept MassHealth, managed Medicare and most commercial insurance plans. Our staff provides insurance verification so you understand your coverage and costs.
Structured Outpatient Addiction Program (SOAP)
SOAP is an in-person treatment program designed for people with drug or alcohol addiction and co-occurring mental health disorders. Similar to an IOP, it can serve as a step-down level of care for people after detox or an alternative to inpatient hospitalization. We work with patients and referral sources, including courts and healthcare providers, to provide consistent structure and support.
Our SOAP incorporates:
- Case management: Licensed social workers connect you to housing, transportation, job services and medical care. They also help coordinate insurance coverage and communicate with referral sources.
- Group therapy: We use evidence-based treatments such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) to help you develop emotional stability and coping skills.
- Medication-assisted treatment (MAT): Medication such as Suboxone® may be part of substance use disorder treatment. MAT can ease withdrawal symptoms and reduce the risk of relapse.
- Peer recovery coaching: Recovery coaches have experience with addiction and understand what you’re going through. They provide non-clinical mentorship and encouragement throughout your journey.
- 12-step work: We discuss principles of Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) and Narcotics Anonymous (NA) and encourage participation in these programs as part of a long-term recovery plan.
- Progress check-ins: When needed, we provide toxicology screenings, attendance reports and other documentation to referral sources to help you stay on track.
